A Queen’s Special Day

"Rise and shine!" a chirpy female voice woke Freya.

Freya's eyes snapped open, which caused the stream of sunlight streaming into their suite to blind her momentarily. She squinted at the brightness, before her vision adjusted. "Oh. Good morning Grailey..." she said in a sleepy voice, smiling.

"Good morning Your Highness," Grailey replied.

Freya dragged herself out of bed, still quite groggy. "What's up for today, Grailey? Why am I awake so early?"

Grailey laughed again. "Oh, Queen Freya, it's already nine in the morning. You have no schedule until after lunch, though. I just thought you might want to enjoy breakfast to energize you for the day."

"Thanks, thanks," Freya smiled. "Just give me a sec to get ready."

"Would you like the maids to bathe you in milk and get you dressed?"

"Uh, no, not today," Freya answered at once. She went into the bathroom and took a cold shower to jolt her senses and give her a boost of energy. As she was changing into one of her custom-made frilly and silly dresses, a sleeveless light blue dress with large colorful flowers printed on one side, she felt her mood lifting.

She remembered how Zaino had kissed her the night before. Her fingers touched her lips as she pictured the moment she would never forget.

"I can't believe we actually slept in the same bed..." she whispered, looking at her reflection in the mirror and brushing her hair.

She decided to forego makeup for the moment. She could smell the wonderful aroma of coffee and freshly baked bread coming from outdoors. Heading out to the patio through the french doors, she called for Grailey. She expected to see the motherly woman ready to join her for breakfast. But as she crossed the threshold to outside, she gasped in surprise. The entire area was decorated with white and pink roses and balloons. Balloons and roses everywhere. She was stunned.

A huge wrapped present was sitting on the round table beside a basket of fruits, a variety of breads and pastries, a pitcher of milk and two cups of steaming coffee. When she got closer to the table, she saw a note on the present. In handwriting she did not recognize. It said, Happy birthday to the best royal events manager of Tryptin! Open me and enjoy the day.

If Freya had not been so surprised to realize that she had forgotten her own birthday, she would have laughed at the job title. Nervously, she tore at the wrapping paper like an excited little girl. It turned out to be a big box filled with expensive-looking baking paraphernalia. "This is amazing!" she exclaimed eagerly, already imagining herself getting busy in the kitchen. She turned around then, looking for Grailey. "You can come out now Grailey. You shouldn't have, really..."

Grailey was nowhere to be found. But from the nearby cluster of trees, she heard a rustling sound. She watched in stunned silence as the ruggedly handsome king came out between the bushes. He had a serious expression on his face.
